Noa was tired. Noa was irritable. Noa was ready to snap at anybody who came her way. She had just found out that her dad had to take on a thrid job to support the kids, and Noa was not happy about it. To make matters worse, she had barely slept the night before studying for a test, and then she'd failed the test. She didn't actually know the score yet, but she could just tell. Noa had flown upstairs to change before dinner, and she'd fell and hit her head on one of the tables in the Common Room. So now, she had a pounding headache, an aching heart, and a terrible mood.
She had hastily dressed in a pair of ripped up jeans and an old black T-shirt that she usually just slept in. She put a turquoise scarf in her hair to hide the goose-egg knot she was forming on her head, and she hadn't bothered to brush her hair all day. She looked as bad as she felt.
Then she slowly made her way down to dinner. She didn't want to be around people at the moment, that was for sure, but she was here anyway, because she didn't want people to think she was turning into a hermit. She grudgingly sat next to her friends, but she didn't engage in any conversation. She picked at her food without knowing exactly what it was, the whole time thinking about her poor little siblings. Maybe she would send all her Christmas and birthday money from last year to them...
Suddenly, Noa felt like coming out of the shell. The thought of giving her own money to them cheered her up, and she almost felt like congratulating herself for her brilliant idea, out loud. She smiled broadly at no one in particular, and continued to eat what she now recognized as some chicken salad thing that did not taste like chicken salad.
