The Conjunctivitis Curse was rather simple and often over looked, but it was very useful if you realized its potential. Most people went straight for the kill in a duel, hitting with their hardest spell first or trying to disarm their opponent. This was a useful tactic in its own right, but only if you knew you had the jump on your opponent. Dueling was like a game of chess and you had to alter your style depending on who you faced. So, blinding Saint seemed like the most logical thing at the time, it gave Alex plenty of time to ready his next spell and put Saint in a very stressful and painful mess.
Saint was at Alex's mercy and seeing as how Alex didn't possess any of that, then Saint was in a very bad predicament. Alex knew a variety of painful and dark spells, along with a few which were perfectly legitimate, even if they were particularly wicked. The severing charm was quite fun and while the school nurse could no doubt reattach whatever limb Alex chose to relieve Saint of, he would no doubt find himself in hot water with the headmaster. Of course, with Saint fumbling around, trying to wipe his painful eyes, Alex had all the time he needed to get his thoughts together and choose a suitable spell.
With a small smirk, Alex collected himself physically, straightening his robes and dusting himself off. He kept his distance from Saint in case the boy tried to blindly cast a jinx or hex at him, a foolish attempt but really the only one Saint had at the moment. Raising his wand, Alex made the tip of it dance as he followed Saint's movements. "Incarcerous," he said, ready to finish this ridiculous duel and move on with the rest of his evening.
